Adult BMI categories
These are the CDC categories for adults aged 20 and older.
| BMI (kg/m²) | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 to below 25 | Healthy weight |
| 25 to below 30 | Overweight |
| 30 to below 35 | Obesity, class 1 |
| 35 to below 40 | Obesity, class 2 |
| 40 or higher | Obesity, class 3 |
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)², or weight (lb) ÷ height (in)² × 703. The weights below are calculated from these formulas and rounded to whole pounds or kilograms. Ranges use BMI rounded to one decimal, as the GLPily BMI calculator does, so values right at a boundary may differ by a pound from other charts.

What a BMI chart doesn’t show
BMI doesn’t directly measure body fat. It can’t tell muscle from fat, show where fat is carried, or capture the effects of age, medical history, nutrition, disability or other individual factors. Two people with the same BMI get the same category even when their circumstances differ. The CDC notes that BMI should be considered with other factors when assessing health.
For children and teens (ages 2–19), BMI is read with age- and sex-specific percentiles, so this adult chart isn’t appropriate. Use the CDC’s Child and Teen BMI Calculator instead.
How to use the chart
Find your height in the first column and read across. For your exact number, use the BMI calculator. Treat the category as a starting point for a conversation, not a diagnosis or a target you must reach. If you have questions about your result, discuss it with a healthcare professional, who can read it alongside your history, examination and lab results. Don’t start, stop or change any treatment or medication based on the chart alone.
